I have received a lot of support, encouragement and good will from the local Victoria community including businesses, individuals and institutions like Camosun, Uvic and Royal Roads. So when I have the opportunity to give something back I jump at the chance and take that responsibility very serioulsy, especially when it comes to students as they are the future of our community and country.
So when I was asked recently by the faculty at Camosun to be a member of the Camosun Marketing Communications Program Advisory Committee, I humbly accepted and was quite flattered. Since then I have been asked by a couple of the Camosun prof’s to come in and talk to various classes about social media.
Today I spoke to a group of 4th year (soon to be graduating) Media & PR students. After consutling with the Instructional Assistant we decided to focus on LinkedIn since social media is a pretty broad topic. I was somewhat surprised to learn that less than half of them actually had created LinkedIn profiles for themselves. I’m hoping that number jumps to 100% in the next few days.
Ask yourself:
- Does my LinkedIn profile jive with what’s on my resume?
- What if a potential employer Google’s my name (and they will)?
- What is a potential employer going to think of my tweet stream?
Here is my presentation although the majority of the valuable content was delivered verbally and live online. If you need more I do have a detailed blog post about Getting Set-up on LinkedIn.
