Christmas Gifts for Geeks

Is there a geek on your Christmas list this holiday season?

Sometimes it can be hard to find gifts for the tech people on your list – or to find something that they don’t already have!

Here are some gift ideas to check out for the geek on your list.

Smart Phone Gloves – Your loved one is always texting or tweeting, so help them keep their digits warm when the weather gets cold. (Trust me, they won’t be cutting back just because the temperature drops!) Smart phone gloves come in a variety of styles and are available from a number of stores and as well as online. (I have seen them at

Atmosphere and the gift shop on BC Ferries.)

Chip Link Cuff Links – I stumbled across these gems on Cragislist – cufflinks made from old circuit boards! They are made by a local couple and add a unique flair to any dress shirt – men’s and ladies. To order, email Gary.Angry Bird anything – If you want to impress a young person on your list, check out the wide selection of Angry Bird swag that is available. From shirts and toques to socks and phone cases, there’s a seemingly endless assortment of goodies. But not all birds are created equal so find a subtle way to find out the best coloured bird for your youngster.

iTunes Credit – Whether or not your loved one has an iDevice, chances are they use iTunes at least for downloading music or videos. iTunes gift cards can be purchased online and in many local stores including Walmart and most gas stations. If your loved one lives in an another city, you can email an iTunes gift certificate right to their inbox. To do this, you must have an iTunes account.

Reading Material – There’s no end to the books and magazines about techy topics. If you’re not sure what your geek’s niche interest is, Steve Job’s biography is a captivating must-read. Available online and in most local bookstores. (I found mine at Costco.)

Customized Jewellery – For the social media geek. Custom jewelry lets you wear your handle or favourite hashtag around your neck. Not suitable for the mildly geeky. Order from a variety of online stores.

Pac Man Cookie Cutters – These are just plain awesome. For the older geek who remembers the “good old days” of arcade games. Available from Amazon.

iGuy iPad Stand – Know a geek with kids? This cute little guy holds your iPad so you can play movies to entertain the little ones. Also good for kidless geeks with a taste for cute things. Available from Amazon.

Cables – Everyone with a cell phone or iPod knows how easy it is to misplace the one cable that comes with the device. Although they’re a practical gift, you can rest assured that extra cables will always be appreciated. Adapters for cars are another handy idea. Official cables are available online and at local electronics stores. Unofficial cables (that are much cheaper and usually work) are available online.

Register them for Social Media Camp 2012 – This is Western Canada’s social media event of the year, so don’t let your loved one miss out. Featuring learning and networking opportunities and special guest, New York Times Bestselling author, Chris Brogan.

The event takes place on June 8 & 9, 2012 in Victoria, BC. For a limited time only you can purchase a gift certificate at the super early bird rate of $199 + HST.

Do you have any suggestions for gifts for geeks that I have missed?
