Another Pebble in My Shoe

Pebbles in My ShoeIt’s been a while since I wrote a "Pebble in My Shoe" post, so this one is long overdue and my feet are getting sore. In fact the last one was a year ago.

Here are the pebbles from Aug 2010:

  1. "Personal branding"
  2. #FollowFriday
  3. Facebook – this could be a rock actually…
  4. *Some auto-follow DMs like "Let us show you how to get fame on Twitter, Myspace, Facebook, Digg, Youtube…" ~ yeah thanks
  5. TrueTwit Validation

All 5 of those items are still around. Funny I had Faceook at #3, guess I was going through an anti-Facebook phase. I don’t mind it these days.  But here’s what I do mind.

These are the pebbles currently residing in my shoe.

  1. People that RT stuff for the thousandth, no millionth time. It’s polluting the socialsphere. At least add some value when RTing something. It’s kinda like the "like" button on Facebook. That’s nice and all but why not say why you like it. That’s what I want to know.
  2. 1a) There’s another thing – numbers, really big numbers. They’re getting so big. A thousand of anything used to be something. Nowadays kids sneeze at a thousand. Don’t even talk to me unless it’s a Googleplex… What!?
  3. Social Media icons in print ads and TV spots that don’t include the URL. Would you include a picture of a phone but not your phone number?
  4. QR codes that link to your website that is NOT optimized for mobile. Did you know that the average mobile phone screen resolution is only 320 pixels wide? I can’t read your site on the phone let alone navigate through it.
  5. Trolls. I got my first troll (hater) recently. Was kind hurt that it took so long. Actually this isn’t a pebble at all. I got a kick out of it…
  6. "Devil’s Advocates". You’re not doing anyone any favours. Either come up with your own ideas or keep it to yourself.
  7. Really long blog posts. I have a few blogs I read fairly regularly, Chris Brogan, Mashable, etc. I really enjoy and value the content but tend to skim when there’s too much and jump to the good stuff. Less is more…

How about you – what bugs you? Aside from blog posts about stuff that bugs the writer of course…

  1. Just thought of one that drives me nuts — cross-posting between Twitter and Facebook. Twitter posts filled with hashtags and abbreviated text look silly on Facebook and Facebook posts get truncated mid-sentence on Twitter. How hard is it to craft something that works in both places or just take the extra 25 seconds to post natively in each.
