Help save the Arts in BC!

Picture 5.png I received this email today from the Victoria Symphony, and wanted to do my part to help restore funding to the BC Arts Council. I know our family loves to attend the symphony and our kids both participate in the annual Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival.

Please give it a read and provide your support by sending an email to the Government Finance Committee at FinanceCommittee@leg.bc.

The full text of the email is below.

Dear Arts Supporters:

URGENT! Please make your voices heard by the government of British Columbia by sending an email to the Government’s Finance Committee by close of business THIS FRIDAY, October 23.

The email address is:
FinanceCommittee@leg.bc.ca

Ask the Committee and the Government to:

· Restore funding to the BC Arts Council to the 2008-09 levels, and maintain the arms-length relationship with the province by funding it through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and the Arts;
· Restore gaming grants to the 2008-09 levels;
· Find ways to offset the impact of the HST on the arts and culture sector.

Some facts that you may wish to include are:

· The latest budget update shows funding for the arts will be cut by 85% next year;
· Arts and Culture is a $5.2-billion industry in BC; 80,000 people work in the sector;
· Provincial arts funding in BC is the lowest per capita of any province in the country;
· BC is the only province to cut investment in the arts – all other provinces, along with the
  Federal and US governments, have at least maintained, and in many cases increased,
  funding as a stimulus measure;
· Every dollar the province invests in the BC Arts Council returns up to $1.36 in tax revenue.

Again, this must be received by Friday. Thank you for your help!

Yours truly,

Mitchell Krieger

    Victorians care about the arts. I hope our combined efforts will be enough to motivate the government to do the right thing.
