Chris asked me to be the keynote speaker at Social Media Camp Victoria. From start to finish, he was nothing but a pleasure to work with. Everything was incredible, and the size of the crowd blew me away. 30 cities are on my book tour, and this stop is right at the top, because of him.

Google Plus Plays Its Trump Card

google-plus-logo3.jpgIt's a competitive industry, and we all know that Facebook, Google and Twitter don't really play fair, right? Well, Google is now playing its trump card!

With the launch of Google+ "Brand Pages" and a new feature called "Direct Connect", Google is firmly integrating + into its web-dominating search platform.

"Direct Connect" allows searchers to insert a “+” before their query and jump directly to a business’s Google+ page. Type “+YouTube” into your Google search box, and Google will take you straight to YouTube’s G+ page.

This is Google's trump card and where they have a huge advantage over Facebook. With an array of services like Gmail and the Chrome (browser) and Android (phone), Google provides tools that are fundamental to our online lives and are all going to be tied to Google+.

Google also has the enormous ability to promote its social network, and your company Page within it, in ways that Twitter or Facebook can't. Although at about 40 million, Google currently has a smaller following that Facebook's 800 million, but that will change quickly. From a user's perspective Google+ provides a richer forum where your company can connect with customers and release news to the public.

I am always curious as to who

I am always curious as to who is going to win this battle.

Facebook pretty much built social, but Google owns search. I think that with being able to integrate the social search right into Google with the +business is huge step ahead for Google.

I think its going to be a long haul, but in the end I think because Google dominates search, they will eventually win social. Although I think when Facebook launches its "timeline" that could perhaps tip the scale again (in either direction).

I'm with Google all the way

I'm with Google all the way Chris. We see search becoming more social and social becoming more searchable, but Google has Android and Chrome, and that's the end of that. For now anyway! Good post. Now onto our Copeland G+ page!

Hi Chris - Many debates

Hi Chris - Many debates underway re Social Search pros & cons. One curious aspect will be the loss of 'objective search' seeing a view that reports on the whole world objectively, scientifically let us say, contrasted with 'Subjective Search' which is bound by simply me & my friends likes.

Hope Google with offer some clarity as to when which is which. As a person building websites and wanting objective views on mine and clients SEO & SERP presence, is it not something of a local reality distortion field to get fed your own reflection custom shaped by Google, one that no one else will ever see?

Kind of unnerving on many levels... Your thoughts...
