If You Had To Give Up Twitter or Facebook?

Facebook-vs-twitter.jpgI spend time on both Twitter and Facebook. More on Twitter. From time-to-time Twitter, Facebook and all of the social media sites and networks make changes to their platform or interface. Usually for the better, but not always.

People get upset when changes are made. It disrupts their flow and requires them to relearn things or change the way they do it. Is there a vulnerability in getting too attached to any one network? To having too much vested in it. This got me to thinking; what if one of them went away. It happens…

The question occurred to me late one night so I posted it on Twitter, not expecting much, and then on Facebook.

Responses, and lots of them, started coming in immediately which was surprising given the late hour.

Asked on Twitter the answers for what they would give up were:

  • Twitter = 5
  • Facebook = 12

When asked on Facebook the answers for what they would give up were:

  • Twitter = 10
  • Facebook = 3

A total of 30 responses and an exact 50/50 split (I kid you not). 15 people said they would drop Twitter and 15 said they would drop Facebook.

And then there was this one…

Interesting results, although I wouldn’t say 30 is statistically significant. The only difference was a few more responses on Twitter, understandable as I have about 3X more followers there than on Facebook.

Comments for keeping Facebook:

More opportunity for interaction – longer comments, more pictures. I have my profile for friends and family, and my business page for… business. I get notifications of people’s birthdays, etc. Just this morning, a friend was tagged in a photo of our Grade 4 class, so I’ve found a bunch of "new" contacts from "back in the day".

Would give up Twitter….it’s just status messages, with too little info. FB has more features.

Twitter. facebook is too integrated in family and friends keeping up with them pics and games is too easily integrated.

Twitter. oh yeah… sorry I’ve only used twitter once. I wasn’t all that impressed.

Comments for keeping Twitter:

Twitter has a wider reach to find answers to questions, its more business minded. Facebook is more entertainment, Twitter is about sharing good or other experiences with a goal that your name would stick on peoples mind.

Facebook. Twitter is quicker more accessible easier to use. Can do facebook-likee stuff on other platforms. T works better on iPhone

Facebook. It doesn’t provide the same social networking or learning opp’s as Twitter. Facebook has decent aggregated conversation.

Give up FB – old friends – keep Twitter, new more relevant friends!!

Me? I would give up Facebook. There are other places to post pictures & video.

  1. For Facebook, I’d really miss the page features, especially “events” and “send a message”. I’d also miss the “these are my real friends” aspect of my network on Facebook.

But I’d definitely give up Facebook before Twitter.

  2. Honestly I don’t think I could give up either. Facebook serves the purpose of tuning me in on my social life with friends and events. Twitter keeps me dialed in on relevance of what’s going on in the world. I’ve made a realm of ‘new’ friends with Facebook. As well as a few key business associates. I’d say that’s a really tough choice. I use each to their greatest potential.

  3. I would give up Facebook. I barely use it anyway, and it doesn’t serve the same purpose for me as Twitter. I get tremendous professional value out of Twitter – I learn every day. It’s people I’m interested in, and share common interests with.

Facebook is a network of people you know through circumstance (school, where you grew up, work associates, etc.). Twitter is a group of people you’ve hand selected based on interests, intellect, humor, etc.

My Facebook friends would be bored silly with my Twitter conversation – we have (mostly) nothing in common.

  4. Can I mess up your stats? After Social Media Camp last weekend, I’m changing my answer. I would give up Facebook in favour of Twitter now.

I answered your poll on Facebook – and found the link to this blog on Twitter. ;D
